Find South Dakota’s Sonography Programs in 2024

Diagnostic medical sonographers play an integral role in the healthcare of their patients.  By using special technology, they take images of the inside of the body.  Physicians then use those images to prevent and treat disease, as well as monitor the health and growth of a fetus inside an expectant mother.

As with most of the medical field, the demand is growing for diagnostic medical sonographers.  Job openings for ultrasound techs in SD are expected to grow by 23% by 2030.

Sonography departments can be costly for colleges and universities to set up, which can result in a scarcity of programs, especially in rural communities.  If that’s the case where you live, you may want to consider looking into other allied health programs.  There are many careers available within healthcare that require just a two-year Associate Degree.

Start by requesting information, and then speak with a representative of the school to have your questions answered.  Be prepared with what you want to discuss to make sure the school will meet your needs.

Accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs

Ad for DMS career guide bookWhen you’re beginning the process of researching programs, one of the most important things to look for is their accreditation.  In sonography and medical imaging, the primary accrediting body is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

When a school or program receives accreditation from the CAAHEP, it means that they have gone through a rigorous review, including a site visit.  This is an indicator that the quality and level of instruction they provide meets the industry standard.

Ultrasound Tech Certification Requirements in South Dakota

South Dakota has no specific requirements for diagnostic medical sonographers to practice in the state. However, most employers prefer or even require their ultrasound techs to carry a professional certification, so it’s something that you’ll want to consider as you begin to consider your education and career path.

The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) is the primary organization offering certification for sonographers, and you must pass one of their tests to gain their certification. Unfortunately, there is only one testing center in South Dakota, but you may be able to find one near you by looking in the surrounding areas. Find the locations and their contact information on the PearsonVue website.

In order to sit for the exam, you must meet one of the prerequisites that the ARDMS has set forth. Probably the most common one is to graduate from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), but there are others as well. Review the list found on the ARDMS website and see which prerequisite will be the easiest for you to meet.
