It’s no surprise that Princeton, Harvard and Yale hold the top three national university spots among the 2014 U.S. News Best College rankings.
But did you know that U.S. News also has a category for best Up-and-Coming schools? “…U.S. News asked the experts who respond to our annual peer assessment survey to identify institutions in their 2014 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking category that are making the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty and student life,” describes U.S. News and World Report.
The university that received the most nominations by “top college officials” for 2014’s best Up-and-Coming School is University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).

Overall UMBC (located in Baltimore, Maryland) ranked #158 among all universities across the country. But along with its top innovative score, it also ranked #6 among U.S. News’ Undergraduate Teaching Methodology schools (topped only by Dartmouth College, Princeton University, College of William and Mary, Miami University-Oxford and Yale University).
According to U.S. News, UMBC has more than 40 undergraduate and 30 graduate programs for students to choose from. Furthermore, the average student to faculty/professor ratio is 20:1 and approximately 85% of freshmen choose to continue their studies there due to being satisfied after their fist year.
UMBC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
One section of this Maryland university is the UMBC Training Centers which offer educational programs that emphasize professional, engineering and technical training characterized by a participatory style of learning. One of UMBC Training Centers’ offerings is the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
This Certificate program is a full time, 13.5 month-long course of study. Students can choose between concentrating in General (OB, pelvic and abdominal), Cardiac or Vascular ultrasound. Each track includes three clinical internships, at workplaces such as the Baltimore-Washington Medical Center, Sinai Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center, York Hospital, among numerous others. Upon completion, successful students are eligible to write national sonography certification exams.

There are 2 other accredited ultrasound technician schools in Maryland that offer sonography programs as well.
