Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) 2025 celebrates “Waves for Days” — a theme that honors both the science of sound waves and the dedication of sonographers who use them every day to improve patient lives.
Ultrasound is far more than pregnancy imaging. Today, diagnostic medical sonographers help diagnose heart disease, assess vascular health, guide biopsies, detect tumors, and evaluate musculoskeletal and abdominal conditions. What is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month?
Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) is held every October to shine a spotlight on the role ultrasound technology and sonographers play in healthcare. Established in 1992 (originally as Sonography Awareness Week), the event expanded to a month-long campaign to reflect the profession’s growing impact.
MUAM is supported by six major ultrasound organizations:
- American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM)
- Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS)
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
- Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
- Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)
