Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month 2024

October 2025 is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month!

Every October, the ultrasound community comes together to recognize the vital role that diagnostic medical sonography plays in modern healthcare. Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) 2025 celebrates “Waves for Days” — a theme that honors both the science of sound waves and the dedication of sonographers who use them every day to improve patient lives.

Ultrasound is far more than pregnancy imaging. Today, diagnostic medical sonographers help diagnose heart disease, assess vascular health, guide biopsies, detect tumors, and evaluate musculoskeletal and abdominal conditions. From emergency medicine to long-term care, sonographers are essential contributors to accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions.

This year’s theme, Waves for Days, highlights both the versatility of ultrasound and the consistent, daily commitment of those in the profession. Whether working in a busy trauma center, a cardiology lab, or a student classroom, sonographers are vital members of the patient care team.

We invite you to share your story about how ultrasound has impacted your life or why you chose sonography as a career. Contact us to share your experience and join the conversation.

The SDMS’ 2025 MUAM theme is “Waves for Days.” Visit the SDMS MUAM webpage to learn more and download official resources to celebrate this month.

What is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month?

Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) is held every October to shine a spotlight on the role ultrasound technology and sonographers play in healthcare. Established in 1992 (originally as Sonography Awareness Week), the event expanded to a month-long campaign to reflect the profession’s growing impact.

MUAM is supported by six major ultrasound organizations:

The goal of MUAM is simple: to educate, to celebrate, and to inspire. It helps the public understand the power of ultrasound, honors the work of professionals in the field, and encourages new students to join a profession that changes lives.

“While many people are familiar with ultrasound during pregnancy, it’s essential to recognize that ultrasound plays a critical role in healthcare for people at all stages of life.” ~ American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine

The Power of Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging has become indispensable across specialties:

  • Cardiology: Imaging the heart and vascular system to diagnose disease and guide interventions.
  • Emergency medicine: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to make rapid, often life-saving decisions.
  • Oncology: Detecting tumors and guiding treatment.
  • Musculoskeletal medicine: Assessing injuries in athletes and active patients.
  • Abdominal and pelvic health: Evaluating organs, reproductive health, and blood flow.

Because it is non-invasive, radiation-free, and patient-friendly, ultrasound is trusted by both patients and providers. Its impact goes beyond images — it provides answers, guidance, and peace of mind.

How Can Sonographers Participate in MUAM?

  • Educate your patients. Use MUAM as a chance to explain how ultrasound contributes to their care. Free fact sheets and guides are available through ARDMS, AIUM, and ASE.
  • Start conversations. A simple, “It’s Ultrasound Awareness Month — would you like to learn more about your scan?” can spark meaningful dialogue.
  • Highlight certification. Talk about the importance of professional credentials. Encourage students and peers to pursue certification for excellence in patient care.
  • Celebrate your team. Recognize colleagues and mentors who have shaped your journey. Host a team lunch, share success stories, or decorate your department with MUAM materials.
  • Engage your campus or community. Organize a classroom activity, create a poster display, or give a short talk to raise awareness about the sonography profession.

Why MUAM Matters

MUAM is more than a month of recognition. It is a platform to:

  • Educate the public about sonography’s broad applications.
  • Celebrate sonographers and their essential role in patient care.
  • Inspire future students to pursue diagnostic medical sonography as a career.

Sonographers are not “just techs.” They are highly trained professionals whose work directly impacts patient outcomes. MUAM provides an opportunity to ensure their voices and contributions are recognized.
