Why Become a Sonographer in Wyoming?

Diagnostic medical sonographers are an important part of the healthcare team.  They use special equipment that emits high frequency sound waves.  These sound waves bounce back to the ultrasound machine and produce images of the inside of the body.  The images are then used by physicians to diagnose and treat disease, as well as monitor the growth and development of a fetus.

Job growth for sonographers and others in medical imaging, as well as the healthcare field overall, is strong.  There is expected to be 11% more jobs for sonographers in 2030 than there were in 2020 in Wyoming.  The availability of jobs, high salary, and a relatively short educational period are some of the reasons why sonography is a popular career choice.

Select a CAAHEP Accredited Diagnostic Sonography Program

The accreditation of the program that you’re thinking of attending is important.  For a program to be accredited means that they have been evaluated by an outside agency, which includes a site visit and an assessment.  In sonography, the primary accrediting body is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

The successful completion of one of these recognized Wyoming DMS programs is the most comprehensive and direct way students can earn eligibility to sit for the ARDMS Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination.  You’ll be prepared with the information and training you need to pass the test, and automatically qualify to sit for their exam.

Ultrasound Tech Certification Requirements

Like most of the country, Wyoming has no specific licensure or certification requirements for ultrasound technicians to practice their trade. However, most employers will prefer or even require a professional certification, so it’s wise to consider how you’ll obtain that in order to make yourself competitive in the job market.  Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited program will automatically qualify you to sit for the exam.

Requirements for Ultrasound Technician Certification in Wyoming

The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) is the most well-known and regarded certification organization. They administer tests in sonography and many of its related specialties, and you must pass two of those tests to be awarded their certification.

Testing for the exam may be coordinated by your school, or you can use the tool provided by the testing administrator to find an exam location near you.

The ARDMS has identified several different prerequisites for taking their test, but you only need to meet one of them. Read through your options on their website to determine which one will be the easiest for you to meet.
